Dogs ithy dry skin is perhaps one of the most common skin related issues dogs deal with and despite so many so called solutions on the market place, most pet owners can not find a permanent cure to an itchy dog. This is because most of the dogs dry skin treatment options available are simply human lotions and shampoos marketed as pet products. This is a big problem because a dog’s skin is ph-balanced and so much different than our is. The result is often excessive scratching and one itchy dog!
We thought we would take a quick look at some of the solutions to help an itchy dog and put them to the test such as medicated dog shampoo. The first group of products we tested were from Petco. We tested the Hartz brands as well as the Petco brand medicated dog shampoos, healing lotions, and sprays. Most of them failed terribly. The products that had oatmeal in them fared ok, but the results were still marginal at best. As dog dry skin conditions require not only repair but moisturizing we decided to expand our search and found some nice products at evolution supply. Their dog shampoos contain oatmeal and do a great job on an itchy dog. What set these products apart from other dog dry skin treatment options was that they were based off of a high quality aloe-vera extract, in other words, they did not have water in them; the liquid base was aloe-vera. The ingredients in the pet products also seemed well thought out. There were silk proteins and numerous essential oils to heal and moisturize. There were also many anti fungal and anti inflammatory all natural ingredients. Zinc-pca was also in the shampoos. This zinc does a nice job killing bacteria and eliminating odors.
So we washed a few dogs and waited a week for the results. All of the dogs dry skin issues we improving dramatically, some even completely after two baths. We also monitored how many itchy dogs we had and the count went down throughout the week. We used the medicated dog shampoo, skin enzymes, and the spray in conditioner. While a bit pricing compared to the big box pet store products, these we by far superior and well worth the money.
